Spotlight On Entertainment: Antonio Saillant

Antonio Saillant

Antonio Saillant doesn’t realize he is on his way to becoming very successful despite finding himself out of his depth when connecting with Hollywood’s best.

Antonio said “So much of my career was based on luck and dreams. Perhaps you’ll be lucky and your dreams will come true. My Mother always said that luck happens when the timing is right, but you must always be prepared. Preparation meets opportunity and I have been given extraordinary opportunities to work with filmmakers much before I even deserved to work with them. I learned so much along this road but the trick is to trace the dots along the way. I owe so much to my Mother and God as they are my source of luck.”

Antonio has done a lot during his time as an Energy Consultant but is committed to making the movie business sustainable and is working towards a greener world through clean, green and sustainable energy in the energy hungry movie industry.

Publicist, producer, director, filmmaker and energy/green activist Antonio Saillant, who lives in New York City, could well be called a Renaissance man – a man with many passions and talents in the ever-changing entertainment world. Yet he admits that he will tackle anything that will make him happy. As long as it includes creative, passionate, talented people with good character that are realistic about how the business works.

Antonio has begun his producing career, forming Angel Light Pictures, and producing low-cost/high quality Indie Features. Angel Light Pictures also expresses Antonio’s vision and passion for creating energy efficient movies and television. Antonio says, “The motion picture industry is such a large user of electricity for its sound stage shooting and diesel fuel for its location filming [that it is a clear target for energy conservation.]”

He says: “In the past decade, I’ve combined my knowledge of the energy business with the entertainment industry in hope of contributing to a green planet.”

He was invited to speak at a Syracuse University event, “Showcase for Sustainability,” on greening the entertainment sector. His speech on sustainable initiatives in film, television and on Broadway was held at the Schine Student Center. Syracuse University (SU) Showcase is a campuswide, EarthWeek celebration of students work on sustainability and the future of a green economy across the energy entertainment and plastics industries.

Antonio was honored to be introduced to the students by Sherburne Abbott, who was appointed Syracuse University’s Vice President for Sustainability Initiatives and Professor of Sustainability Science & Policy. Abbott, a leading expert in the field of sustainability science and policy, currently serves as the associate director for environment of the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President. Coordinator of Sustainability, Rachel May, also pointed out that Syracuse is a top school in Journalism, and Antonio’s speech gave students an extraordinary understanding of the “green future of entertainment.”

Antonio with perhaps undue modesty attributes much of his success to these friends and mentors, and particularly to his two mentors Ron Kamen (energy) and Ted Kotcheff (film). When I asked Kamen about the mentorship, he replied, simply, “Antonio is such a gentleman.”

We asked Antonio to tell us about his emergence into the movie business—and then into the green movie business. Well, Antonio said, at one time he dreamed of playing professional baseball and in fact he actually became a semi-pro player. But the untimely death of his brother spurred his reinvention of himself as an aerospace/mechanical engineer. His career change has been to enter the movie business.

Antonio has known Kamen since they both worked as project engineers for the World Bank in DC in the 1990’s and terms him one of his mentors.

Ted Kotcheff – Canadian film and television director giant, from “old Hollywood” became a close friend and mentor of Saillant’s. Kotcheff directed U.S. films throughout the 1970′s and 1980′s such as First Blood in 1982, starring Sylvester Stallone. In the 1990′s, Kotcheff returned to directing television series such as NBC’s notable “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” where he finished thirteen seasons as Director and Executive Producer.

Antonio would admit that most of her formal training came from “on the job” experiences. Due to his passion for the business and the knowledge he amassed he soon ended up working for such heavyweights like Academy Award winning director Sydney Pollack, Ted Kotcheff, Stunt Coordinator Danny Aiello Jr. and the so talented Broadway musical director Michael Rafter and many others. But soon he would venture on his own and build his companies Angel Light Pictures and Planet Greenfest.

Saillant worked on other high level filmmaker’s projects, learning the nuts and bolts of production, and worked as a producer. He spent several years shadowing his mentor, Ted Kotcheff and learning from him, not to mention, learning in a highly popular television drama series, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. Saillant gained knowledge and education into how the industry really works at the studio level, from the inside out.

Kotcheff is not Saillant’s only inspiration. He has taken instruction from business models and philosophies of our century’s top entrepreneurs. A singular model for Planet GreenFest, Australia’s highly successful, TropFest, and its creator John Polson. TropFest is the world’s largest short film festival, now reaching over 150,000 people live on a single night in February of each year. Polson is the creative director of what is now called Tropfest, after its premiere venue, the Tropicana Café. He is also an award-winning actor and director, and co-Executive Producer of “Elementary” on CBS.

Planet GreenFest – Greening on Screen- it will give filmmakers the chance to screen their films and to speak and teach about Going Green, locally, then globally. The films shown at the Planet GreenFest film festival will be shorts, 10 minutes long. Antonio sees himself as a mentor and an educator for these filmmakers. Antonio is very optimistic about the impact of these films – he expects that the festival will eventually go global.

Antonio says, “I plan to take what I have learned in the energy business and apply it to the entertainment industry, in the hope that this experience will inspire other filmmakers and also our partners, vendors and audiences as well.”

He also stated that, “Involving the entertainment industry to creating a lot of buzz in the Green Initiative, in hopes that the audience will get inspired from the experience, follow our lead and set the bar even higher in the years ahead.”

In his years in the PR industry he has proven to be attentive to detail and know how to improve artists exposure in the media. He has developed contacts with such media giants. In addition to his publication connections he is also up to date with the current social media trends. These building blocks helped him build his production company that is beginning to be a force in the entertainment industry.

Antonio has had the pleasure to have worked on set with such A-list talent like Kevin Spacey, Sean Penn, Nicole Kidman, Robin Williams, Sharon Stone, Channing Tatum Terrence Howard, Christopher Meloni and Mariska Hargitay an Emmy and Golden Globe plus Emmy award-winning music director Michael Rafter and many others.

Antonio prefers to work with established artists since it is difficult to develop press for undeveloped talent but he has made an exception to the rule in some cases.

Antonio produced his first film, Heterosexuals and then followed up with The Ascension and two short films “Red Right Wrong” and “The Truth Behind the Chords.”

Antonio recently joined Healing Seekers as a producer. Healing Seekers is where exploration and discovery bring heightened awareness to the value and significance of every life form, especially as it relates to the health and healing of the world. We trek to Planet Earth’s most biologically rich areas, exploring the environment, life species, and the indigenous cultures to bring these discoveries and experiences to others.

Antonio is true to his beliefs as he remains humble and continues to receive much praise for his works.
